The city has a rich history and is protective of its historic architectural fabric. Over 1,000 historic buildings contribute to the human scale and charm of the downtown and residential areas. Lake Worth was settled in the late 1800's just after Congress passed the Homestead Act of 1862, and in 1896 Henry Flagler extended his rail line south from West Palm Beach, making Lake Worth more accessible for new settlers. In 1912, the Lake Worth was formally incorporated and in January of that year Lake Avenue became the first street to be graded and rocked. As the town began to become more populated, the need to construct a dock at the foot of Lake Avenue became obvious to residents; it extended 1,000 feet into the Lake Worth Lagoon. Shortly after, Bryant Park was established and it remains beautiful and active to this day, complete with a modern bandshell for festivals, concerts, and recreational activities.
As settlers moved to Lake Worth in the early twentieth century, they built homes, grocery stores, churches and restaurants. During the summer of 1912, a survey of the town was completed that laid out fifty-five miles of streets, and nearly as many miles of alleys, as well as 7,000 residential lots ranging in size from 25 to 50 feet wide. The small lot sizes were part of a sales tactic that coupled the purchase of multiple acres of farm land west of the community with a small town lot in present-day Lake Worth.
After a short period of neglect and decline in the 1980s and 1990s, the downtown area has seen a huge resurgence in interest and now sports an array of art galleries, sidewalk cafes and night clubs. Once moribund property values have soared. The city's main street, Lake Avenue, contains some of the oldest commercial structures in south Florida, including the Lake Worth Playhouse.

Lake Worth contains a bounty of public parks and open space. The Municipal Beach is one of the last remaining large tracts of open, public space on the ocean in southeast Florida. Established in 1927, the Lake Worth Golf Club has been the epicenter of the community.
