Even in a buyer’s market with record low interest rates and home prices, some Americans are still opting to rent houses and condos rather than buy. The Wall Street Journal explored this changing view of renting in a recent article entitled “Renting Prosperity.” Recent trends in renting are revealing that to certain Americans, flexibility is becoming increasingly more appealing than ownership. But as WSJ reporter Daniel Gross states in the article, this doesn’t mean that renters are by any means settling. “This may sound like a decline in living standards. But the new realities of our increasingly mobile economy make it more likely that this transition from an Ownership Society to what might be called a Rentership Society, far from being a drag, will unleash a wave of economic efficiency.” Some experts believe this shift in thinking may be a result of the mortgage troubles that have plagued the economy in recent years. In other words, some are simply choosing to not risk the consequences of an unpredictable market. Here at Lang Realty in Florida, we believe that whether it is better to rent or buy depends primarily on the resident.
