Florida’s general sales tax is 6%, and only new mobile home sales are subject to a 3% sales tax, according to the Florida Department of Revenue. “Sales tax is added to the price of taxable goods or services and collected from the purchaser at the time of sale.”

So, are home or condo sales completely tax free? Not exactly. What is real estate sales tax in Florida and is there a sales tax on houses? Your Lang Realty agent will advise you that a buyer is subject to certain taxes on a residential real estate deal, but they’re not sales taxes per se. A seller is responsible for federal capital gains taxes. There is no Florida state capital gains tax. But the residence will have property taxes owed to the respective county every year. Palm Beach County has exceptions called Homestead Exemptions. “Florida grants a standard $25,000 exemption on the assessed value of qualified residential property. An additional exemption up to $25,000 also may apply to your property. Homestead Exemption is granted to permanent Florida residents only.

You must own the property and it must be your permanent residence on January 1st to qualify,” according to the Palm Beach County Property Appraiser. Are there any other taxes a buyer will be responsible for? There’s a transfer tax paid by the seller. If you’re asking “how do I apply for sales tax in florida?” there is no such thing. And if you’re thinking of trying before buying, “Florida law allows counties to impose local option transient rental taxes on rentals or leases of accommodations in hotels, motels, apartments, rooming houses, mobile home parks, RV parks, condominiums, or timeshare resorts for a term of six months or less.”
