In the midst of a soaring 1920’s economy, California native and architect, Addison Mizner, was commissioned by the recently incorporated Town of Boca Raton’s town council to design a world-class resort community. Mizner’s Mediterranean Revival architectural style was soon embedded throughout the town, and is still apparent throughout the city’s streets today. Included in Mizner’s original projects were the design of a city hall for Boca Raton, the currently restored Boca Raton Historical Society, and the Cloister Inn - currently known as the city’s exclusive landmark, the Boca Raton Resort and Club. Many refer to Boca Raton as the Beverly Hills of South Florida.

The Boca Raton Resort & Club is one of Mizner’s masterpieces and remains an important part of the community. Since its 1926 debut, the resort has realized a number of additions. Originally named the Cloister Inn, The Boca Raton Resort & Club is an elite enclave including the original structure and a pink tower visible from miles away as it seems to rise out of the Intracoastal Waterway. The Cloister Inn was one of the most significant additions to the city. Due to the magnitude and location of the resort, it provided an important infrastructure to East Boca Raton. Beyond the affluent aspects of the resort, it was used as a military barracks during World War II. Thousands of servicemen based in South Florida, many of whom remained in the area after the war ended, were housed there. After the war, many stayed and helped to transform and grow the city of Boca Raton’s population.

Retail Therapy

Shopping in Boca Raton is only rivaled by such locales at Manhattan and Beverly Hills. Town Center at Boca Raton is the largest indoor mall in Palm Beach County. Easily accessible from East Boca, West Boca, Delray Beach and other cities, Town Center offers an array of stores, boutiques and dining options. Department stores include Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Macy’s. Boutiques include Burberry, Bulgari, Hugo Boss, Tiffany, Cartier and more.

Mizner Park is the epicenter of culture in Boca Raton.
