The History of Lantana

The first settlers came to the area in the mid 1800's, however,  the M.B. Lyman family is credited with founding the town after arriving in 1888, and establishing a handful of local businesses including a post office, general store and an Indian Trading Post.  Initially named Lantana Point after the incredible number of lantana plants flourishing in the area, the town eventually dropped Point and is now known as Lantana.

Incorporated in 1921, the area was one square mile with a residential population of 100.  Today, the thriving town spans close to three square miles and nearly 11,000 people call Lantana home.

The well-planned downtown offers numerous amenities including Lantana Sports Complex, a 22 acre facility with basketball courts, softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, tot lot and a concession stand. Ocean lovers and fishing enthusiasts enjoy Sportsman's Park, a downtown waterfront destination with two public boat ramps that borders numerous boutiques and destination restaurants like the Old Key Lime House, Florida's oldest waterfront restaurant started by the Lyman family in 1889. In addition, several mixed use buildings offer an opportunity to live and work within walking distance of the blossoming downtown.
